 Types Of Wood Finishing

Every furniture product, of course, in the final stage will go through a finishing process. This process is useful to give a beautiful appearance to furniture products that have been made, and also to cover some of the weaknesses of wood in terms of color, texture and durability in terms of impact and weather conditions. There are various types of wood finishing. Based on the type of material, there are 2 types of CAT finishing for solid and processed wood, namely Transparent and Non-Transparent.

1.     Transparency Layer

a.       Camphor

Usually in the form of flakes or bars melted with alcohol. But some are ready to use with the right alcohol composition. Polisher is applied by using cloth that is Polished Periodically On The Surface Of The Wood. The Camphor Application Can Be repeated periodically if the color has faded.

b.      Nitro Cellulose (Nc)

Made from NC resin and thinner. This material will form a waterproof film, but not strong enough to withstand scratches or physical impact. NC is applied with an air spray or brush.

c.       Melamik

Provides a better film coating than NC. Melamic coated wood surface becomes very smooth because the wood pores are closed. This material is harder to coated and will smell sharply after application. There are 2 finishing options, namely matt and glossy. Application with spray or brush.

d.      Polyurethane (PU)

It is the thickest type of final film. It looks like a layer of plastic so it makes the wood unnatural. Its resistance to heat and water is very good, making PU suitable for exterior furniture.

e.        Water Based Lacquer

Using pure melted water and resin left on the surface of the wood. Waterproof and scratch coating. This bhan is liked by consumers from Europe.

2.     The Layer Is Not Transparent

This material will cover 100% of the entire surface of the wood and hide its original appearance. The physical form can be in the form of paint duco and coating (laminate) in the form of sheets or rollers.

a.       Duco Paint

Is a method of spraying duco paint on the surface of furniture. The color varies such as striking shapes and colors. Suitable for modern and minimalist furniture and children’s furniture. The price is relatively expensive and when painted, original fiber cannot be returned. The application uses a spray or brush. With current technological and design advancements, various motifs can be made from this paint, such as stone, marble, thousands of broken motifs as well as silver, copper and gold motifs.

b.      Laminate

Is a method of finishing furniture by attaching a coating on the surface of the furniture. The coating process uses special wood glue, such as yellow glue. Commonly used coatings include veneers, PVC, decosites, tacons, HPL.

c.       Layer

Made of thin wood fiber. The motive depends on the type of wood; there are teak, sungkai, nyatoh, camphor or mahogany motifs. The furniture that is covered with this resembles real wood so it looks very natural. Sold in rolls with a width of 10-20 cm, the price is relatively more expensive.

d.       Hpl (High Pressure Laminate)

Made of a mixture of Acrylic and wood. The outer layer resembles wood and contains wood fiber, but the back is acrylic. HPL is usually in the form of sheets measuring 120 cm x 240 cm and 3 mm thick. The variety of motifs and colors is quite a lot and the surface is textured. Prices vary depending on brand and motif. Plain colors are relatively inexpensive and silver colors are the most expensive. The advantage of HPL is that it contains elements of wood, suitable for those who want to display natural wood colors. This material is strong (because it is thick enough) and elastic so that it can be bent to coat the edges of the furniture.

e.       Pvc (Polyvinyl Carbonate)

Is a sheet-shaped layer and is made of plastic. Its surface is smoother than material from other plastics, such as tacon and decosive. Sheets are 120 cm x 240 cm and 3 mm thick. Color choices are limited, there are only chocolate and its derivative colors. The price is relatively cheap.

f.       Decosheet

Made of plastic material, thinner than tacon. The roll is shaped with a height of 120 cm, thickness is less than 1 mm, while the length is unlimited. Has a fairly diverse motives. The price is cheaper than other types of laminate.

g.       Tacon / Tacosheet

Same as Decosheet, made of plastic. The roll is shaped with a height of 120 cm, thickness is less than 1 mm, while the length is unlimited. There are quite a variety of motifs and textured surfaces.

The Difference Between Solid Wood And Processed Wood For Making Furniture

The difference between solid wood and processed wood is something you need to know before deciding to make or if you want to buy furniture products. Both types of wood have many differences that are important for you to know. First of all you need to know that in making furniture there are indeed some materials that can be used as the main ingredients. Among the materials that are often used in making furniture is solid wood. On the other hand, many also use processed wood as the main material in making furniture.

Solid wood itself is pure wood. The wood is wood cut from the forest and can be directly used as material to make furniture. Some wood which can be classified as solid wood include teak, mahogany, tamarind, pine and others. Wood usually grows in the forest for years before it can be used as furniture. Meanwhile, processed wood is wood that has been through the process. From the name alone it can be understood that this type of wood is man-made or unnatural wood. The wood is composed of various mixtures of particles. In its manufacture requires several materials including sawdust from solid wood, glue, which is then pressed in such a way as to form a board.

In plain view, this processed wood will still show this mixed material. Processed wood itself has several types including multiplex (plywood), MDS (Medium Density Board), Blockboard and others. The difference between solid wood and processed wood will be very visible. In the past, the main material in making buildings was solid wood. They make various buildings such as houses, cupboards, boats all using solid wood, for example using teak wood. The reason for using this type of wood is because of its quality and durability. The use of processed wood for furniture can be said to start to bloom in modern times as technology develops. Indeed, this technology really helps humans to get materials to make various furniture or buildings. But of course, the quality of processed wood will not be able to beat the quality of solid wood.

A. Get To Know Processed Wood

As mentioned earlier that processed wood is made from various mixed materials or waste from solid wood. The material is then put together to make processed wood with a tool that has very high pressure. So getting this type of processed wood will indeed be easier than natural wood or solid wood. That is why processed wood is relatively cheaper than solid wood. The price that tends to be affordable makes people often use processed wood in making furniture such as making house doors, tables, and others. But on the other hand, they will not get quality furniture made from genuine solid wood. Indeed, using processed wood is only for furniture as if it were made of solid wood.

This processed wood material is certainly not as strong as solid wood. Artificial wood will be easily damaged if exposed to water. Therefore, this wood is not suitable for furniture that will be used outdoors. Even more worrying is that processed wood is not good for health. Processed wood has a pungent odor and is also a material that is not good for human breathing. That is why it is important to know the difference between solid wood and processed wood.

B. Get To Know Solid Wood

Meanwhile, solid wood is the best choice material in furniture making. Solid wood also guarantees better quality. But of course, the price of solid wood will be more expensive when compared to processed wood. In making furniture, there are some solid woods that are most used by furniture craftsmen. Solid wood is teak. This type of wood is valued as first class material in its field. This wood has fiber and natural color. Teak is more durable when compared with other types of wood, especially when pitted with processed wood.

In conclusion, solid wood is more expensive than processed wood. However, this type of wood has a far superior quality and does not have a negative impact on health. Thus, solid wood is also worthy of being the first choice in furniture manufacturing.

Sonokeling Wood, Luxury Javanese Original Wood

This is a tree with wood that is so strong, deep black, and is often used for household furniture. The sonokeling tree is called. For the wood industry, Sonokeling wood is known to have excellent quality, both in terms of texture and wood fiber as well as strength and durability. The texture or pattern of Sonokeling wood fiber is very beautiful with purplish black or purplish black lines with a reddish brown color.

Sonokeling wood (or Sanakeling) is known as luxury wood originating from the island of Java, Indonesia. Together with teak wood, Sonokeling became excellent. Besides having a very good and strong durability, this wood texture is unique and beautiful. Not surprisingly, the price is expensive. Unfortunately, this native plant of Indonesia (Java) is starting to be hard to find in its natural habitat, the IUCN Red List lists it as a vulnerable species. The Latin name of this plant is Dalbergia latifolia Roxb., With the synonym name Amerimnon latifolium (Roxb.) Kuntze and Dalbergia emarginata Roxb. In English it is known by several names such as Indonesian Rosewood, Bombay Blackwood, Indian Rosewood, Malabar Rosewood, and Java Palisander. Whereas in Indonesia Sonokeling is sometimes called Linggota, Sono Sungu, or Sonobrit.

Sonokeling or Sanakeling is a hardwood-producing plant of the Leguminosae family (also called Fabaceae). The tree is medium to large with a height reaching between 20-40 meters. The stem is able to have a diameter of up to 1.5 meters. Pepagan (outer skin) brownish gray with longitudinal cracked cracks, odd pinnate compound leaves. Consisting of 5-7 leaflets that are alternating, the size of the leaves of children is not the same. The shape dull wide, green above and grayish at the bottom. During the dry season, Sonokeling kills the leaves. The Sonokeling tree (Dalbergia latifolia) has small-sized flowers with a length of about 0.5-1 cm. Flowers are collected in panicles that grow in the armpits. Sonokeling fruit in the form of brown pods with lancet shape elongated and tapered at the base and tip. Fruits that contain 1-4 brown beans which are rather soft.

Sonokeling is a native plant of Indonesia that grows in central and eastern Java. Its natural distribution globally, besides Indonesia, is in India (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh) and Nepal. The habitat is a tropical rain forest with a height below 600 meters above sea level. It grows in groups, especially in rocky, dry, and infertile areas that experience periodic drought. Besides having a fine texture and ornamental wood fiber, Sonokeling wood is also known to have a high level of strength and durability, especially in wood patio areas. Sonokeling wood is resistant to termites, insects, and other wood-damaging fungi without the use of preservatives. With these advantages, Sonokeling wood is considered worthy of luxury wood with high economic value. Even the quality is considered almost the same as teak wood. So this type of wood is often used in the furniture industry, handicrafts, and other household furniture industries. Also used as prime quality plywood coatings for parquet floors (hardwood floors). With its high economic value, making the exploitation of these plants a major threat to the sustainability of the Sonokeling tree. The population of sonokeling trees in the wild continues to decline even tends to be difficult to find. Therefore the IUCN Red List lists these plants as Vulnerable species since 1998.

9 Parts Of Wood

Humans have used wood for thousands of years, ranging from fuel for cooking, lighting, making furniture, building materials, paper materials, and more. The use of parts of this tree as a whole or solid has been greatly reduced in line with the problem of global warming and the reduction of forest land in the world. Historically, timber plants that appeared in nature were first thought to have occurred in 395 to 400 million years ago. Besides being used to meet various human needs, wood can be used as a historical reference regarding climatic and weather conditions at the time the tree grows which can be seen from variations in the distance between growth rings.

In general, wood consists of 9 parts, namely:

1.        Skin

Leather is one part of wood. This skin is the outermost part that is owned by wood. The skin itself has two parts, the first is the outer skin that is dead, and the second is the inner skin that lives. Outer skin that is dead has a different thickness. This thickness is based on certain tree species, dry, and also old colors on tree bark. The second bark is a living bark. Skin in life has a very thin thickness. The function of this inner bark is to transport the modified latex sap to the part of the tree that is growing. In addition, the skin can protect the inside of wood from damage caused by insects, pests, climate, and fires.

2.      Cambium

The next piece of wood is the cambium. This cambium is a thin and clear network of wood. The shape is a kind of lender that is in the part between the skin and wood. In addition, the cambium function can also surround the wood, externally forming new bark and replacing old skin that is old and damaged, and in line with the formation of new wood.

3.        Chubal

The part that consists of cells that are still alive and still functioning are responsible for distributing food from the leaves to other parts of the tree. This sapwood is located next to the cambium and functions as a liquid distributor and as a place to store nutrients in wood. This accumulation of nutrients will continue to provide the food needed by wood during its growth on the tree. This sapwood has a thickness of about 20 cm

4.      Terrace of wood

This is the part that consists of cells that are old and die so they don’t work anymore. Even so, this part serves as an amplifier for tree growth. The terrace is more durable and has an older color than sapwood

5.      Heart of wood

It is the middle part that comes from the original wood, the wood that was first formed by cambium and is soft and brittle in certain types of wood. But those that are hard on certain types of wood

6.      Fiber

This section has a direction and size that varies depending on the type. Some are straight fibrous, some are bent, chime, choppy, and some are very small, medium or even large. Fiber is a cell composition that looks like a shaft and is long. The relative size of these cells is called texture..

7.      Pores

The size of the hole size varies depending on the type.

8.      The fingers

This is a network formed from the arrangement of radial cells from the outside to the center. This network is also called a radial network. These wooden fingers are perpendicular to the trunk from the skin to the liver which functions as a food channel that is easily processed in the leaves to help the tree grow. The better the radius of the tree, the faster the wood can be used as building material.

9.      Circle of years

The year circle is the boundary between wood formed at the beginning and end of the season. The year circle can determine the age of a tree. If the age of the tree is old, then the function of the wooden part of building materials will also function optimally in strength and ease of use.

Utilization of wood for various human needs is now mostly used only as building materials, furniture, and paper-based materials only as a result of reduced forest land and the accompanying global warming problem. For the basic ingredients of the paper industry, the parts used are the ends and branches of trees. In fact, from one tree trunk, only 40-50% of the tree becomes a tree trunk. Saw wood is around 53% or around 21.2% from one tree trunk. After that, from sawn to furniture or furniture around 60%. In other words, only 12.72% of tree trunks are the furniture in our homes. That is why now found many furniture made from processed wood or wood dust waste because the price is cheaper.

Difference Between Old Teak Wood and Young Teak Wood

Teak wood, known as class I hardwood and class II durable, has no doubt about its quality. Teak is an ideal wood group due to its strength, durability, and fiber beauty. This wood is very resistant to termite and fungus attack. In addition, teak has good resistance to changes in weather and temperature. All these advantages make this wooden Latin name, Tectona Grandis, expensive. However, it must be understood that all the properties of perfect teak are only owned by old teak wood. Old teak wood is teak derived from teak trees that are more than 80 years old. This high quality teak is obtained from natural growth trees that are developed through seed germination. This type of teak wood has a texture and fiber that is smooth and dense, and small pores.

Large stems also make old teak wood have little connection. In addition, the dark brown color from old teak wood can also display an elegant and sturdy impression that adds to the advantages of this class I wood. Old teak wood has a high level of durability. This is based on the nature of teak trees, the older the tree is, the smaller its water content, the greater its specific gravity and durability. Not surprisingly, old teak is also very well used for furniture making or building construction. In teak there is also an extractive substance called Tectoquinone, an oil-producing substance. This substance is located on a wooden terrace contained in a teak tree trunk. The older the tree, the greater the percentage of wood terraces so that more oil is also produced. This oil makes teak wood resistant to termites and mold. In addition, oil can also make teak look luxurious.

Unfortunately, all the advantages of teak wood have begun to be difficult to find. Teak wood that is now widely circulating in the market is young teak produced from cultivation in the range of 5-7 years. Teak wood of this type is classified as class V. The characteristics of young teak are large fibers and wavy surface texture. Besides that the color tends to be white. Because of his young age, the content of young teak oil is still so small that it is not resistant to termites. Even so, some special treatments to increase the strength and endurance of young teak wood are now beginning to emerge. It’s just that young teak is still not recommended for building construction. More suitable for non-construction furniture or building needs. The treatment commonly used by wood entrepreneurs is wood preservation with soaking and healing techniques. This technique is able to extend the life of wood compared without soaking and baking.

For maximum results, young and old teak must be protected by covering the surface of the wood. Finishing options are stains (transparent colors / fibers still visible), paint (fiber cover colors), and varnishes (clear coating). Teak wood with good fiber is very precise in finishing with coloring to expose the beauty of wood fibers. Meanwhile, for young teak wood, it can be colored first and then varnished, so that the color looks more mature. while the old teak wood whose color is ripe is only enough lacquer.
