Why does water stain wood?

Let’s start with the basics, shall we? Understanding why water stains wood. The white ring marks you are seeing on your highly-polished wooden tables are actually the moisture from your drinking glasses and/or plates/bowls, trapped underneath the shellac. However, if you’ve got teak tables, the watermark is actually closer to the surface, as there is no layer of shellac applied. A white/light colored stain indicates that the moisture hasn’t actually permeated the deeper makeup of the wood, meaning it shouldn’t be too difficult to erase. However, if the mark is darker it may take a little more work.

What to use to remove water stains from wood?

Removing water stains from teak is as easy as can be. A regular kitchen scourer and a squeeze of light detergent will do the job. However, if you’re dealing with a highly polished wooden table, you’ll need a little more equipment. Historically, you would use cigar ash and olive oil and we like to stick to the old school method.

1. Polyurethane

This type of polyurethane coating is very suitable for application on outdoor furniture. That’s because this coating can produce a thick layer which is useful for increasing the durability of wood. So that wooden furniture that is outdoors will be able to withstand hot weather, heavy rain, and is resistant to scratches, therefore wooden furniture that uses this material will last a long time. 

2. High-Pressure Laminate (HPL)

This type of coating is somewhat different from the previous type of coating because the way to apply it is no longer with a brush but is affixed to the surface of the furniture with wood glue. In its application, it is usually done on a blackboard. The price of high-pressure laminate (HPL) on the market is quite cheap with many choices of colors and patterns so that you can adjust it to your liking.

3. Veneer

Veneer coatings are the same as HPL because the installation method is not applied with a brush but is attached to the surface of the furniture with wood glue. In applying it must be done carefully because it has a thin layer so it is easily damaged. Veneer coatings generally have a natural wood grain appearance, giving the furniture a natural feel.

4. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

Polyvinyl chloride or better known as PVC has a thickness that is almost the same as the veneer coating, so care must be taken in its installation. PVC coatings are available in various sizes on the market so you can buy them according to your needs. Besides that, it is also available with many choices of motifs, so there are many choices and not monotonous.

5. Varnish

Apply varnish to coat wood. Varnish type coatings are very easy to use, so they are quite popular among the public, and have a natural finish, and display the wood grain beautifully. However, varnish type coatings are less suitable for use for outdoor furniture because they have less resistance to sun heat and rainwater.

6. Melamine

The next type of coating is melamine, this coating is suitable to be rolled over for furniture in the house because the colors you have will usually fade quickly if you are too often exposed to the hot sun. Types of melamine coatings have various finishes such as glossy, semi-glossy, and matte or matte finish.

1. Ensuring Surface Condition of Wood First

The first way to use the correct base paint is to first confirm the condition of the wood that will be applied to the primer. If the wood used is used wood or is repainting it, you should first clean the old paint that is still attached to the surface. Use sandpaper no.80 to make it easier or you can also use bio remover to remove it.

When painting new furniture that has never been touched by paint before, you should make sure that the wood is clean, dry, and has a flat surface. If you find a wood surface with a hole, it is better to apply to caulk and for an uneven or wavy surface, it is better to smooth it first using sandpaper.

2. Correct Application of Base Paint

After making sure that the surface of the wood looks even and smooth enough, it’s time to paint using a primer. We recommend that you apply a wood base painted in at least 2 layers so that later it produces outer paint with perfect color and does not look dull.

Wait for the second coat of primer application until the first coat dries on the wood surface. Then coat again with a second layer, do it several times with at least 2 layers.

3. Application of the Main Wood Paint

After finishing applying basic paint to the wood surface, the next step is to paint using the main paint material. In the use of wood main paint, there are two types that need to be known, namely pigmented wood paint and wood stain wood paint. If you want a natural impression, you should use wood stain paint because it will give a natural and transparent finish so that the wood fibers can be seen clearly.

4. Good and Correct Drying Process

After all the painting processes are complete, the final step in this process is drying. The drying process also should not be done carelessly. The habit of many people when they finish painting is to dry it in direct sunlight, even though this method is not good to do.

When drying wood paint in direct sunlight it is likely that the paint will crack and bubble. If this condition occurs it feels useless even if you do the painting correctly. Try drying in the shade, even if it will take longer.

TEAK WOOD

Teak Wood which has the scientific name Tectona Grandis,  grows in Java and Sulawesi Island. Nevertheless, teak quality from Java is considered the best because teak grows well in a dry and calcareous areas like in Java island. The color of teak wood is vary between light brown to dark brown. Teak wood is more durable because it contains much natural oil. Eventhough more durable, much oil content makes teak wood not match with solid finishing with bright colors such as white, red, green, etc. It happens because as time goes by, teak wood will release the natural oil that causes stains. It makes yellow stains on the furniture.  Therefore, becareful with the finish types. Use natural finish to avoid stain impression and to bring up beautiful fiber streaks. The beautiful fiber streaks are what furniture lovers seek.

BENGKIRAI WOOD

Bengkirai Wood or Yellow Balau which has the scientific name Shorea Maxwellianam, found in rain forest in Kalimantan Island. The color of Bengkirai Wood is brownish yellow. The wood core has darker color compared to its surface.

Bengkirai wood has long and straight fiber. Besides, compared to other wood, Bengkirai is the most brittle wood. No wonder there are cracks like hair after drying.

Bengkirai wood is a kind of hardwood. Therefore, it is often used as a deck outside. The price of Bengkirai Wood is cheaper than Teak Wood, but the quality of Teak Wood is superior to Bengkirai Wood.

So, you can choose what you want or by your budget.
