Plastic is one of human`s made which is not environmentally friendly. Plastics can polluting environment even killing animals. Sadly, plastics is widely used in our needs especially for the food wrap or drinking.

“Back to nature” has become a trend and it is supported by many parties and government who care about environment. Societies especially in developed countries change their habit to use natural materials or reducing plastics. They use tumblers for drinking, food boxes, and changing wrapping from plastics to pulps materials. We should appreciate these acts for sustainable environments.

Previously we had reviewed teak wood grade A which is the best and super premium quality. Now, we continue to review teak wood grade B and C.

TEAK WOOD GRADE B

This is the outermost from the heart of teak wood (heartwood). The diameter is around 25—35 cm. The edge of this grade is not used so it has minimum stripes.

This grade B part is 25%–30% from the whole one log. The colour is a bit more lighter compared to grade A. It has less regular fibers and not dense compared to grade A fiber.

Teak wood grade B is a medium quality. It is less shiny because the oil is lesser than grade A. However, it is still a good teak wood for furniture and the price is still expensive but cheaper than grade A.

TEAK WOOD GRADE C

This grade includes the outermost of wood stem (sapwood) and teak plant that is still young. This part is around 40% of the whole one log. Sadly, it has no natural oil for protection. That`s why grade C is a low quality teak wood. Off course the price is far below grade B and A.

The colour of teak wood grade C is white. The diameter of grade C is 17—25 cm. The edge part of this grade is still used so that white stripes will appear. This edge part is softer and relative easy to be eaten by insects/pests. But don`t worry because by using anti-pest materials and with proper handling, this can be overcome.

Teak wood is really strong and durable. It is resistant to weather changes even in 4 season countries. It is also resistant to any insect attack. That`s why teak furniture is famous and very in demand all over the world. But do you know that teak wood`s grade influences its strength and durability?

Teak wood is divided into 3 grades. Let us review teak wood from grade A!

TEAK WOOD GRADE A

This is the best quality of teak wood grade. It is premium even super premium teak wood. The diameter is usually above 30 cm. It comes from teak plant with minimum age 40 years.

In one wooden log, there are 3 grades of teak wood. From the core to outermost we have grade A (core/pith), grade B (middle/heartwood), and grade C (outermost/sapwood). Off course the quality of each grade is different, A is the best. Sadly grade A is only 25% of the whole log. It makes grade A rare and very expensive.

How to recognise the characteristics of teak wood grade A?

Look at the fiber. Grade A`s fiber is straight, aligned, and very tight.

The color is homogeneous, more brown than other grades.

It feels a little slick oily (natural tectoquinon compound) when you touch the wood`s surface. This oil is the secret of teak wood`s strength and durability.

It has no stripes because the edge part is not used. It is very match for relief making because usually relief from wood doesn`t use any finishing except for the frame.

It has minimal defects such as wood knots.

MERBAU WOOD

It is alternative wood to alter teak wood because the quality is similar to teak wood. The price also not really far from teak wood. The color is a bit red and yellow. There is also grey to black color.

Texture of Merbau Wood is like dotted straight line. To process Merbau Wood, you need to take extra efforts.

IRON WOOD

It is kind of hardwood. The color is light brown.

The more frequent exposed to water, the wood looks more beautiful. Sadly, the texture is not really good, the fiber is unseen. Other weakness is this wood has cracks like hair on the surface.

BENGKIRAI WOOD

The color of Bengkirai Wood is brownish yellow. The wood core has darker color compared to its surface.

Bengkirai wood has long and straight fiber. Besides, compared to other wood, Bengkirai is the most brittle wood. No wonder there are cracks like hair after drying.

Bengkirai wood is kind of hardwood. Therefore, it is often used as deck outside.

SEA RESIN WOOD

It is kind of hardwood. It looks like Bengkirai wood but the fiber is straight or twisted. The color of new Sea Resin wood is brownish yellow but the more it is exposed outside, the darker the colors. The price of Sea Resin wood is cheaper compared to Bengkirai wood.

The processing of Sea Resin wood is difficult because it is a hardwood. It needs more efforts to procces the wood.

Sometimes, we want to put wooden furniture outside house for a certain purpose. For example we put bench wooden furniture outside as the seat in a garden. Therefore, we need wooden furniture made from special wood that is strong against weather changes and also termites. So what woods we should use?

TEAK WOOD (TECTONA GRANDIS)

Teak wood is a hard wood. Teak wood is the best quality wood among others. It is a premium wood. It has stunning and interesting texture (fiber). Besides, it is not easily damaged by impact.

Quality levels of teak wood are grade A (best), B (good), and C (standard).

The color of teak wood is vary between light brown to dark brown.

Teak wood is more durable because it contains much natural oil. Eventhough more durable, much oil content makes teak wood not match with solid finishing with bright colors such as white, red, green, etc. It happens because as time goes by, teak wood will release the natural oil that causes stains. It makes yellow stains on the furniture.

Therefore, be careful with the finish types. Use natural finish to avoid stain impression and to bring up beautiful fiber streaks. The beautiful fiber streaks are what furniture lovers seek.

Teak wood grows in Java and Sulawesi Island. Nevertheless, teak quality from Java is considered the best because teak grows well in a dry and calcareous areas like in Java island.

CONVERSION VARNISH

This coating looks like Nitrocellulose Lacquer. It can only be applied in shops using specialized spray equipment. It is hard to remove and provides strong protection.

POLYURETHANE VARNISH

It delivers a clear coating. Multiple layers of coating give a substrate a plastic type finish. It provides strong protection. Eventhough the solvents in the coating are petroleum-based, the coating is relatively safe. It is also quite durable.

If you want to remove the coating, you can use paint removers.

WATER-BASED POLYURETHANE

It produces a clear coating without the plastic look. It is safer than traditional polyurethane varnish. The coating dries rapidly. Besides, this coating is durable.

OIL WOOD FINISHES

You can use Tung Oil and Linseed Oil. They can accentuate the wood`s grain. However, they don`t provide much protection.

The application of oil wood finish is easy, but drying takes 12 hours or longer.

To remove the coating, the substrate must be sanded down because oil absorbs into the wood.

Types of Wood Finishes

Here they are 3 types of wood finishes

1. Wax

Wax finish is easy to use and apply on wood. Its shape is pasta and suitable to highlight the natural wooden color. It creates a nice shine. However, it often needs to be reapplied. The protection from wax finish is minimum and easy to remove.

2. Shellac

Shellac finish is a clear finish. Some grades carry a distinct yellowish tint. Shellac finish is effective to protect against solvent except alcohol. The coating is durable. It doesn`t require reapplication. However, shellac finish can be removed using alcohol. Shellac finish is an effective base layer and compatible with other coatings.

3. Nitrocellulose Lacquer

Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish is a clear coating that creates a hard, glossy finish. This finish provides good substrate protection and has strong durability. Like shellac and wax, nitrocellulose lacquer can be removed. Eventhough this finish is water proof, but it has low resistance to scratches and impact.

The characteristics of Rustic Style house are using natural materials, open roof shape and highlight old and rough material, and no plestering wall or using stones with rough texture. Rustic Style is really flexible and match if we want to combine it with other architecture style such as minimalist and modern as long as the furniture is unfinished even cleaned with machine. Avoid new metal such as stainless steel that can create contemporary feeling.
